Don McKay, “Stress, Shear, and Strain Theories of Failure”: This is an unusual feature in the oeuvre of Don McKay, who normally eschews anything resembling set forms. This one, from his most recent collection, makes me hope there’s more in this vein to come. The demands of the rhyme scheme, however loosely he tries to meet them, seem to rein in the sometimes erratic flight of his improvisatory meditations. Terrific tension created by inserting the dramatic movements of tectonic plates into the cozy confines of a sonnet. Really, compared with your average igneous rock, the sonnet’s a new kid on the block.
